Signal and Noise

Wednesday, September 9, 2026, 8:42 a.m. ET. The one thing that matters this morning is oil. Brent crude, the global barrel, traded at $100.84, up about 3.0% from Tuesday's settlement, as fighting in the Middle East put oil-flow fears back on the menu. That matters to you because expensive fuel beefs up shipping, flying and driving costs, which can keep inflation hot and interest rates high. The stock market can swallow a bad headline. It has a harder time swallowing a bigger gas tab. (Yahoo Finance live futures data, 8:41 a.m. ET; Reuters, 7:37 a.m. UTC.)

Yesterday's Scoreboard

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average: 52,786.07, down 1.18%. The old-school 30-stock index took the hardest punch.
  • S&P 500: 7,673.52, down 0.58%. The broad large-company scorecard slipped, but did not implode.
  • Nasdaq Composite: 26,421.41, down 0.32%. Tech fared better than the Dow, but still finished red.
  • Best big-stock mover: Intel (INTC), up 9.05% to $104.47. Traders bet that server-chip shortages will let it sell more chips at better prices.
  • Worst big-stock mover: Novartis (NVS), down 13.21% to $138.85. Bad clinical news hit biotech, a reminder that one failed drug can torch billions before lunch. (Closing data: Yahoo Finance and TradingNEWS.)

The Signal

  • Oil above $100 is a tax raise without a legislature. The U.S. 10-Year Treasury yield sat at 4.808%, the return investors demand to lend Washington money for a decade and a rate that feeds mortgages and business loans, so higher energy and high borrowing costs are sitting at the same bar. (Marketwall, 8:41 a.m. ET.)
  • Nasdaq-100 futures, contracts that bet on the index's next price, fell 0.65% while S&P 500 futures fell 0.44%. That gap says high-value tech is catching more pressure than the broad market, because faraway profits look less valuable when rates rise. Plain meaning: your index fund can look calm while the expensive names inside it get smoked. (Marketwall, 8:41 a.m. ET.)
  • Mission Produce (AVO) traded at $13.68, up 6.3% before the bell. Quarterly revenue jumped 26% to $450.0 million and adjusted earnings, profit excluding selected one-time costs, of $0.18 a share beat the $0.12 Wall Street guess, but the company still posted a $6.5 million net loss after deal costs. Plain meaning: the avocado business sells well, the back of the kitchen still needs cleanup. (Yahoo Finance, 8:26 a.m. ET; company release.)

The Noise

  • Apple (AAPL) product-event rumors are not a market thesis. The show starts at 1:00 p.m. ET, but pricing, unit demand and whether people actually want a folding phone matter more than the stage lights. Plain meaning: do not mistake a keynote for an earnings report.
  • J-Star Holding (YMAT) jumping 75.1% premarket is not proof the market loves anything. The stock fell 22% Tuesday, and thin early trading can turn a tiny campfire into a nine-alarm fire. Plain meaning: a giant percentage on a tiny stock can be casino noise.
  • Bulls saying \"oil only crossed a round number\" are selling comfort. Brent has risen about 25% since early August, so $100 is the marquee, not the movie. The plain meaning: the path matters more than the symbolic number.

On the Clock

  • 10:30 a.m. ET, U.S. crude-oil inventories. This counts barrels in storage, and a large draw would say supply is tighter than the scared-price traders already fear. This is the day's main economic number.
  • No scheduled Federal Reserve speeches are on today's board. That leaves oil, bonds and Thursday's wholesale-inflation report to do the talking.
  • Before the bell: Chewy (CHWY), Academy Sports (ASO) and Signet Jewelers (SIG). Watch sales forecasts more important than one-cent earnings beats.
  • After the bell: AeroVironment (AVAV) and AEO Inc. (AEO). Watch defense-order backlog for AeroVironment and store traffic for American Eagle outfitters as the hardest numbers to fake.

IPO Watch

  • Siyata PTT (PTT), expected September 8 on Nasdaq, reference price $7.00. The Canadian company makes rugged push-to-talk devices for first responders and commercial fleets. This is a direct listing, so there is no normal initial public offering price range and no bank steadying the open. The SEC filing warned that Nasdaq approval was not guaranteed, and I do not know whether trading actually started Tuesday. Watch the first real price and volume, meaning how many shares change hands, before believing any neat story.

Levels I Am Watching

  • SPY: $763.22 at 8:41 a.m. ET. $762.49 is the premarket floor where buyers last stepped in; $767.13 is the ceiling where sellers turned it back. Traders call those floors \"support\" and those ceilings \"resistance.\" (Yahoo Finance, one-minute trades.)
  • QQQ: $714.48 at 8:42 a.m. ET. $713.45 is this morning's floor; $720.67 is the ceiling. Below $713.45, tech sellers have control; above $720.67, buyers have retaken the room. (Yahoo Finance, one-minute trades.)
  • Mission Produce (AVO): $13.68 at 8:26 a.m. ET. $13.40 is the premarket floor; $13.97 is the ceiling and the first test of whether earnings buyers have real conviction. (Yahoo Finance, one-minute trades.)

Term of the Day

Volume means the number of shares that change hands. A price move with big volume is like a packed kitchen shouting the same order, while a move on tiny volume is one cook talking to himself.

The Posture

Patient, with hands in pockets until oil and the opening wave of selling shows its hand.
