The Flex: Spears Just Made RB27 Look Expensive
The Snap
Tyjae Spears did not win August with a touchdown montage. Better. He won the snaps that matter. Tennessee started Tony Pollard, then rotated Spears into early downs, third downs, and short yardage. Both backs left together. Spears played more snaps, ripped a 25-yard run, and the split landed much closer to 50-50 than last season.[1]
Now look at the room: Pollard is RB27 in ESPN drafts. Spears is RB50. That is a 23-slot canyon for a backfield that just showed us shared money downs and shared dirty work. Pollard still has the first snap. Fine. First snap does not pay fantasy points by itself.
Do not crown Spears off one preseason opener. Do move him up. The market is pricing an insurance policy while Tennessee is showing standalone usage. That mismatch is the whole game.

Jeremiyah Love
Arizona gave Love the start and 14 touches across the first three drives. He turned 11 carries into 58 yards and caught 3 passes for 14 yards.[1] The production was nice. The first-team workload was the headline. He is already priced like an RB1, so the useful takeaway is role confirmation, not permission to reach.
Matthew Golden
Golden ran with Green Bay's starters in 12 personnel, while Jayden Reed remained mostly tied to the slot. ESPN has Golden at WR40 and projects him to lead the Packers in targets, even though no Green Bay wideout has cleared a 21% target share since Davante Adams left after 2021.[1] The ceiling is real. So is the committee scar tissue.
Josh Downs
Indianapolis sat Downs with its established starters. Michael Pittman Jr. left behind 111 targets, and ESPN projects Downs for 110 at a current WR45 price.[1] We already have the proof of concept: 72 catches, 803 yards, 5 touchdowns on 107 targets in 2024. That is not a camp puff piece. That is late-round volume wearing a fake mustache.
Carnell Tate
Tate worked primarily at Z with Tennessee's starters, the alignment Brian Daboll used for Malik Nabers in New York. ESPN projects Tate to lead the Titans with 127 targets, while Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike rotated more than expected.[1] Tate's role has teeth. The names behind him are still fighting over scraps.
Jayden Higgins
Houston made Higgins inactive while Xavier Hutchinson played, a strong veteran-style signal for Higgins' standing. ESPN projects him second on the Texans in targets and lists him at WR57.[1] If the Z job holds, WR57 is a clearance sticker.

Tyjae Spears: More snaps than Pollard and work in every major situation. The RB50 price is still pretending this is a one-man backfield.[1]
MarShawn Lloyd: Every snap on Green Bay's opening drive with Josh Jacobs sidelined. His DraftKings Best Ball ADP rose 17 picks this week, and NBC Sports still called him a buy.[1][2]
Stefon Diggs: Up 43 picks, the largest move on NBC's board. New England held him to a 71% route rate last year, yet he still averaged 2.1 yards per route, top 15 among wideouts even with the postseason included.[2]
Slipping
Tony Pollard: Still the starter. Still too rich at RB27 if Spears owns early downs, third downs, and short yardage beside him. Good player, bad spread.[1]
Makai Lemon: Down 12 picks after missing camp with a hamstring issue. Dontayvion Wicks is pushing for two-WR snaps, which puts Lemon's September route floor on a trapdoor.[2]
Antonio Williams: Down 22 picks after Washington added Diggs. He is fighting for WR3 now, and NBC Sports took him off the fantasy menu.[2]

Tyjae Spears, RB, TEN, RB50, NEW: Near-even usage with Pollard across all situations gives him standalone value before the injury upside even enters the room.[1]

Pollard costs RB27, but Tennessee showed a near-even rotation that included third downs and short yardage, not just change-of-pace fluff.[1] Buy the role gap before the room catches it. One round early is aggressive enough. Two rounds early is how a value turns into a story you tell yourself.
Injury Desk
ESPN reported Chuba Hubbard is week to week with a hamstring injury, though Dave Canales expects him ready for the September 13 opener. Jonathon Brooks gets the runway Saturday after Hubbard ceded work last season and Carolina let 275 Rico Dowdle touches walk.[1]
ESPN also reported Saints rookie Jordyn Tyson left Thursday practice with a believed hamstring issue after bilateral strains limited him to 9 games at Arizona State in 2025.[1] Josh Jacobs is dealing with a groin injury and has no firm return date in the reporting reviewed.[1] Monitor both. Do not draft a recovery timeline nobody has supplied.
