The Flex

Fantasy football, daily. The news that moves lineups and the calls worth flexing.

The Flex: Detroit Is Giving Away Points Sunday Night. Go Take Some.

The Snap

Jahmyr Gibbs is scoring 32.8 PPR points a game, and his Sunday night trip to Carolina (Oct. 4, 8:20 p.m. ET) is the best backfield matchup on the board. He has an 80% carry share (the percentage of the team's running back carries this player got) and 7.7 red zone touches a game (carries and targets inside the opponent's 20. This is where the touchdowns live). Carolina allows 30.5 PPR points a game to backs, third most in football. PPR points allowed means fantasy points (one point per catch) a defense has given up to a position each game. High number, soft matchup.

Look at the other side and it gets better. Detroit's defense allows 31.7 points a game, the most in the league. It is also the softest defense in football for quarterbacks (30.8 PPR points allowed) and tight ends (33.4). Bryce Young throws 42.3 passes a game and averages 23.1 PPR points. The DraftKings total, the over/under on combined points from both teams, is 51.5, tied for the week's highest.

The catch: Jalen Coker (quadricep) and Xavier Legette (knee) did not practice. Start Gibbs. If you stream quarterbacks, start Young. What would make me wrong: both receivers sit and Young spends the night throwing to Brycen Tremayne, fourth on the depth chart.

The Setup

Nobody is on bye. The key number is the implied team total: how many points the betting market expects a team to score, worked out from the spread and the total. Bigger number, more touchdowns to go around. The spread is the head start the underdog gets.

Four games tie at 47.5, so the top six runs eight deep.

Detroit and Buffalo lead the week at 27.5 implied points, with Cincinnati and Baltimore next at 27.0. Baltimore's game total is only 42.5, but DraftKings has the Ravens -11.5. That leaves Tennessee at 15.5 and Derrick Henry running out the clock. Indianapolis at Washington kicks off at 9:30 a.m. ET, so set that lineup early. Washington allows 46.7 PPR points a game to receivers, the most in football.

Fade the three 38.5 totals: Pittsburgh at Cleveland (tonight, 8:15 p.m. ET), Green Bay at Tampa Bay and Miami at Minnesota. Miami's 14.0 implied total is the worst on the board.

Usage Report

Three games is a small sample, so trust the thing that settles fastest: who gets the ball. The pack doesn't flag anyone as playing for a new team, so every baseline below comes from the roster he plays with now.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba sets the bar with a 36% target share. Target share is the percentage of the team's pass attempts thrown at this player. Volume is the most stable thing in fantasy, and this is volume. He also has a 52% air yards share, which is the share of the team's intended throwing distance that went to this player. It shows who gets the deep, high-value looks. Put them together and you get WOPR. WOPR is Weighted Opportunity Rating: target share and air yards share blended into one number. Above 0.6 is elite usage, 0.4 to 0.6 is a weekly starter's diet. His is 0.91. He isn't on a hot streak. He is the Seattle offense.

Michael WilsonARI26%41%0.6713.4
Brian Thomas Jr.JAX14%18%0.345.3
Marvin Harrison Jr.ARI7%22%0.273.8
  • Arizona's WR1 is Michael Wilson, not Marvin Harrison Jr. Wilson gets 10.3 targets a game and Harrison gets 3.0. Drafters had it backwards: Harrison's August average draft position (ADP) was 63.8 and Wilson's was 87.0. Start Wilson against a Giants defense that allows 35.9 PPR points to receivers. Bench Harrison until the targets show up.
  • Jacksonville's WR1 is Parker Washington. Brian Thomas Jr. went right next to him in drafts (67.8 ADP to Washington's 65.9) and is getting barely half his target share. Washington is a WR2 in a 51.5-total game. Thomas belongs on your bench.
  • Derrick Henry has 9 goal line carries in three games. Goal line carries are carries from inside the 5, the most valuable touch in fantasy. Add a 70% carry share and a Ravens team at 27.0 implied, and he is the surest touchdown on the slate.
  • Emanuel Wilson is the one hiding in plain sight. His 3.6 PPR points a game hide 6 goal line carries and a 41% carry share. That's more than depth-chart starter Jadarian Price (35% carry share, 1 goal line carry). He hasn't turned those into points yet. Stash him before he does.

Start-Sit

The ranks below run 1 to 32. For PPR points allowed, 1 is the softest defense. For defense EPA, 1 is the best defense. EPA per play is Expected Points Added: how many points a play moved the team toward scoring compared with an average play from the same spot. Positive is good on offense, negative is good on defense.

QB. Start Bryce Young vs. DET (30.8 allowed, 1st), Dak Prescott at HOU (21.3, 6th) and Jacoby Brissett vs. NYG (40.3 attempts a game; Giants 29th in pass defense EPA). Sit Drake Maye vs. BUF (1 TD, 6 INT; Patriots 21.0 implied), Justin Herbert at SEA (12.3 allowed, 29th) and Baker Mayfield vs. GB (did not practice, thumb; Bucs 17.5 implied).

RB. Start Gibbs (30.5 allowed, 3rd) and James Cook vs. NE (Patriots 28th in run defense EPA; Bills 27.5 implied). Start Chuba Hubbard vs. DET if he's active: his missed practice was a rest day, and the Lions are 30th in run defense EPA. Sit De'Von Achane at MIN (Vikings 1st in run defense EPA; Dolphins 14.0 implied; third on the depth chart). Sit Omarion Hampton at SEA (Seahawks 2nd in run defense EPA).

WR. Start Josh Downs at WAS (46.7 allowed, 1st; 0.65 WOPR), Malik Nabers vs. ARI (36.4, 7th) and Tetairoa McMillan vs. DET (39.0, 3rd). Sit Marvin Harrison Jr. (7% target share, even against the Giants' 35.9 allowed) and Malik Washington at MIN (Dolphins 14.0 implied). Sit Jameson Williams at CAR too. Carolina allows 23.2 to receivers (31st). Amon-Ra St. Brown's 30% target share can beat that matchup. Williams's 15% can't.

TE. Start Isaiah Likely vs. ARI (17.6 allowed, 6th; 26% target share), Tyler Warren at WAS (21.4, 3rd) and Travis Kelce at LV (21.7, 2nd). Sit Mark Andrews vs. TEN (7.4, 30th). Sit Kyle Pitts at NO: the matchup is soft (20.7 allowed, 4th), but it can't fix 2.0 targets a game.

Flex. Start D'Andre Swift vs. NYJ (24.1 allowed to backs, 9th; 6 goal line carries) and Stefon Diggs vs. IND (Colts 27th in pass defense EPA). Sit Bhayshul Tuten at CIN (Bengals 6th in run defense EPA).

Coin flips

  • Javonte Williams at HOU or Saquon Barkley vs. LA? Houston allows the fewest PPR points to backs, 11.8. The Rams allow 17.4 (24th). Tiebreaker: Williams, with 4.7 red zone touches a game to Barkley's 1.7. The touchdown chances go where he goes.
  • George Pickens at HOU or Rashee Rice at LV? Houston allows 39.6 to receivers (2nd). Las Vegas allows 23.4 (30th). Tiebreaker: Pickens, with a 23% target share to Rice's 17%.
  • Dalton Schultz vs. DAL or Dalton Kincaid vs. NE? Dallas allows 17.3 to tight ends (8th). New England allows the fewest, 6.2. Tiebreaker: Schultz, with 8.3 targets a game to Kincaid's 5.7.

Waiver Wire

The ADP numbers come from August drafts and are only a rough guide to who is rostered. None of these six had an ADP, so either nobody drafted them or the feed missed them. If a name is already taken in your league, move down the list.

1. Juwan Johnson, NO, TE1. 16.1 PPR points and 2.0 red zone touches a game. The Saints are at 25.0 implied against an Atlanta defense that allows 17.2 to tight ends. FAAB: 15%.

2. Dalton Schultz, HOU, TE1. 19% target share. The Texans are at 25.8 implied against a Dallas defense that ranks 31st in pass defense EPA. FAAB: 12%.

3. Kalif Raymond, CHI, WR3 on the chart. The depth chart says third, but his usage says second: a 20% target share to Luther Burden III's 22%, and 15.5 PPR points a game. The Bears are at 23.5 implied. FAAB: 10%.

4. Keenan Allen, IND, WR2. 19% target share, heading into a Washington defense that allows 46.7 to receivers. He was limited on a rest day. FAAB: 8%.

5. Devaughn Vele, NO, WR2. 7.3 targets a game, and Atlanta allows 38.5 to receivers (5th). FAAB: 7%.

6. Kenyon Sadiq, NYJ, TE1. 12.9 PPR points a game, and backup Mason Taylor missed practice. Chicago allows only 8.3 to tight ends (26th), so stash him and don't start him. FAAB: 3%.

Injury Report

Nobody in the pack has an Out, Doubtful or Questionable tag yet. Every listing reads "not on final report yet," so this list is sorted by practice status, worst first. Don't read anything into how serious these are.

  • NYJ: Breece Hall (quadricep); Braelon Allen is the handcuff. Adonai Mitchell (finger); Isaiah Williams is next. Mason Taylor (thumb), TE2.

Limited

  • BAL: Lamar Jackson (back; Tyler Huntley backs him up), Zay Flowers (hamstring), Chris Moore (ankle), Durham Smythe (heel).
  • WAS: Jayden Daniels (elbow; Marcus Mariota backs him up), Chig Okonkwo (hamstring), Ben Sinnott (rib).
  • HOU: Nico Collins (hamstring; Xavier Hutchinson next) and Dalton Schultz (rest).

Buy Low, Sell High

The pack's last-three-week window is the whole season so far. So this section compares usage with production; it can't show trends yet.

  • Buy George Pickens: a 0.57 WOPR but only 10.3 PPR points a game. That's a WR2's volume.
  • Buy Jaylen Waddle: a 45% air yards share and a 0.63 WOPR, but only 9.1 PPR points.
  • Buy Malik Nabers: a 0.50 WOPR on 7.2 PPR points, with Arizona up next.
  • Sell Brock Purdy: 27.0 PPR points on only 27.7 attempts a game. He's riding 0.62 EPA per dropback, nearly double the next-best quarterback in the pack, Lamar Jackson at 0.32.
  • Sell Christian Watson: 23.1 PPR points a game, but teammate Matthew Golden gets more targets (10.0 a game to 9.7) and a bigger air yards share (39% to 28%).
