The Flex: Warren Stole the Backfield, Not the Touchdown
The Snap
Jaylen Warren did everything Thursday except finish the drive. He handled 17 carries for 93 yards, caught 3 of 6 targets for 33, and produced 126 yards on 23 opportunities in Pittsburgh's 27-24 loss. Travis Homer got the only other two Steelers running back carries. Rico Dowdle watched with a toe injury. That is not a committee. That is one guy taking the whole kitchen while Homer holds the receipt. [1][2]
Warren has now cleared 20 opportunities in consecutive games without Dowdle, and he averaged 5.5 yards per carry against Cleveland. The touchdown column says zero. Ignore it. The workload was RB1-grade, the efficiency held, and six targets protected the floor when Pittsburgh fell behind. [2]
The so-what is simple. Warren is a weekly RB2 whenever Dowdle sits. If Dowdle returns after the long week, Warren slides back toward flex territory, but the split should no longer default to 50-50. Pittsburgh just learned what happens when it quits getting cute.
The Calendar Says
This is mid season, Week 4, with 2 days until Sunday kickoff in London at 9:30 a.m. ET on October 4. The next date that matters is that early Colts-Commanders lock, not the usual 1 p.m. scramble. Three games gave us enough usage to trust roles, but not enough touchdowns to trust box-score rank. Follow snaps, routes and touches. Leave the touchdown fortune-telling to your league mate who drafted two kickers. [7]
Around the League
Travis Etienne Jr.
New Orleans placed Etienne on injured reserve with the hamstring injury from Week 3, costing him at least four games. He had 19 carries for 57 yards before leaving, then Alvin Kamara took six carries and Kendre Miller took four. Kamara gets the first shot, but this is a three-back room until somebody takes it. [3]
Puka Nacua
Nacua said he practiced fully Thursday, but the Rams officially listed him as limited for the second straight day. Sean McVay expects him back after two missed games. Start him if active, but keep the official designation above the player quote. The injury report wins that argument every time. [4][8]
Jayden Daniels
Daniels was limited for a second straight practice while wearing a brace on his twice-dislocated left elbow. Washington has not named him for Sunday, and Marcus Mariota remains the fallback. The 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff saves managers from the late-swap circus. [4]
D'Andre Swift
Swift was a surprise Thursday DNP with a knee issue after not appearing on Wednesday's report. Kyle Monangai has averaged 5.9 yards per carry and 8.8 yards per catch in limited work. Add Monangai now if he is free, then wait for Friday before declaring a coup. [4]
Stock Watch
Climbing
Jaylen Warren: He owned 23 opportunities, all but two running back chances, and turned them into 126 yards. Dowdle can return, but he cannot erase that tape. [1][2]
Matthew Golden: Golden has 253 receiving yards, eighth most through three games, after drawing 12 targets in two of three. He is a starter now, not a cute bench stash. [5][6]
Kenyon Sadiq: The rookie turned 8 targets into 7 catches, 105 yards and a touchdown, including gains of 24 and 43. He is already 54.9% rostered. The cheap window is closing. [6]
Slipping
Ollie Gordon II: Jaylen Wright says his foot is fine, and Miami is expected to use Wright on passing downs with Gordon in short yardage. Gordon's 61 snaps and 20 Week 3 touches bought an audition, not a deed to the backfield. [4]
Chig Okonkwo: He remained limited Thursday, and the regular-season role still has not matched the August promise. This shelf thesis is cooked. Waiver wire, no ceremony. [4]
Pat Freiermuth: The touchdown rescued a 3-catch, 17-yard night on five targets. Darnell Washington also drew five targets and scored. You can stream Freiermuth, but the weekly ceiling is wearing a fake mustache. [1]
The Sleeper Shelf
Kenyon Sadiq, TE, NYJ, ADP not re-verified, RISING: Seven catches, 105 yards and a score pushed him to 54.9% rostered. The market found him. [6]
Matthew Golden, WR, GB, ADP not re-verified, GRADUATED: 253 yards through three games and two separate 12-target outings. Shelf called it early. [5][6]
Ollie Gordon II, RB, MIA, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: The 20-touch Week 3 takeover now faces Wright's expected return. Hold, do not force him into Week 4. [4]
Adonai Mitchell, WR, NYJ, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: The finger injury cost him Week 3, and Sadiq just turned the missing targets into a breakout. The WR2 volume thesis needs fresh proof.
Chig Okonkwo, TE, WAS, ADP not re-verified, CUT: Limited practice plus no bankable role. August usage does not pay October bills. [4]
Tyjae Spears, RB, TEN, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: He returned to limited work Thursday while Tony Pollard practiced fully. The passing-down thesis survives, the Week 4 start does not. [4]
The Flex Call
Start Bhayshul Tuten as an RB2 in Week 4, ahead of Ollie Gordon II and Jaylen Wright.
Tuten's first three rushing lines are 13 for 66, 13 for 65 and a touchdown, then 15 for 73 and a touchdown. Miami is walking into a committee while Tuten's workload has climbed every week. Take the growing role over the mystery box. [5]
Injury Desk
ESPN reported Travis Etienne Jr. was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, guaranteeing at least four missed games. CBS Sports reported Swift's new knee DNP, Jefferson's second straight missed practice, Daniels and Okonkwo limited, and Wright saying his foot is fine. Rams Wire reported Nacua was officially limited again and DeVonta Smith missed a second practice with a hamstring injury. Those are the fresh deltas. Friday's final reports still own Sunday.
