The Flex: One Ankle Just Repriced Round 2
The Snap
Jeremiyah Love's preseason opener went from rookie rocket fuel to an immediate price check. NFL.com reported Sunday night that Love has a high ankle sprain, is unlikely to play again this preseason, and is only hoped back for Arizona's Sept. 13 opener. That is not a return date. That is the optimistic square on the calendar.
The tape and usage were real. Love handled 14 touches, turning 11 carries into 58 yards and catching three balls for 14 yards. He ripped gains of 9, 14, and 16 yards after a slow start. The problem is the market already charged for the breakout. His current consensus PPR ADP is 25 overall, RB13. James Conner has not reached full 11-on-11 work after last year's foot injury, and Trey Benson is managing a knee issue. This backfield is not crowded now. It is a group chat full of medical updates.
The read is simple. Love still has the best ceiling in Arizona, but pick 25 prices in a clean runway that no longer exists. Do not pay retail for a rookie who now loses the two most useful installation weeks of August.
The Calendar Says
This is Preseason Week 1, with 23 days until the Sept. 9 opener between New England and Seattle. The next date that matters is Aug. 20, when Las Vegas and Houston open Preseason Week 2. This week, box scores lie for a living. Starter snap order and who leaves with the ones are the evidence, while next weekend gives us the closest thing to a dress rehearsal.
Around the League
Jonathon Brooks
With Chuba Hubbard out, Brooks played 78% of Carolina's starter snaps, handled 100% of the starter rushing attempts, and posted a 50% route rate. The box score was three carries for five yards. Who cares. That usage is the story, and his PPR price has already moved from RB36 to RB34.
Ja'Kobi Lane
Baltimore sat Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, then started Lane with the second-team offense. That puts the third-round rookie in front of Devontez Walker and Elijah Sarratt for WR3 work. His PPR ADP is WR69, while Sports Illustrated's projection sits at WR59 with roughly 16 yards per catch. Free upside, actual depth-chart signal.
Ty Simpson
Simpson went 21 of 25 for 190 yards and two touchdowns, both to Dean Connors, after Stetson Bennett played the first two drives. NFL.com noted most of it came against third and fourth stringers. Great debut, wrong fantasy conclusion. He is still behind Matthew Stafford and Bennett, so this is dynasty tape, not redraft helium.
DJ Moore
Moore caught three of four targets for 61 yards in his first game with Josh Allen, then had his ankle rolled up after a catch. Bills coach Joe Brady said he was "good to go." The injury scare goes in the trash. The four targets stay on the desk.
Stock Watch
Climbing
Jonathon Brooks: 78% of starter snaps and every starter carry is stronger evidence than five rushing yards. RB34 is no longer a cute stash price, but the role still beats the market.
Ja'Kobi Lane: He owns the early WR3 lane at WR69, and Bateman produced only 224 yards in 13 games last season. The door is not cracked. It is open.
Josh Downs: His PPR ADP moved from WR45 to WR42. Established-player treatment kept him out of meaningless work, and the market is finally paying attention.
Slipping
Jeremiyah Love: The ceiling survived. The Round 2 price did not. A high ankle sprain with no preseason return and only a hoped-for Week 1 comeback is not what pick 25 bought three days ago.
Xavier Legette: Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker each played 100% of snaps with Carolina's starters. Legette managed a 67% route share. That is WR3 deployment, not a breakout setup.
Rashod Bateman: Lane started with the second unit and has the size-speed profile Baltimore lacks behind Flowers. Bateman's 224 yards in 13 games last year bought him zero insulation.
The Sleeper Shelf
Tyjae Spears, RB, Titans, RB48, RISING: Added at RB50. The near-even early-down, third-down, and short-yardage rotation keeps standalone work alive.
Josh Downs, WR, Colts, WR42, RISING: Added at WR45. The market moved three spots, but the established role still leaves room.
MarShawn Lloyd, RB, Packers, RB56, RISING: Added at RB60. First-team work while Josh Jacobs manages a groin issue is exactly the contingent profile this shelf wants.
Jonathon Brooks, RB, Panthers, RB34, RISING: Added at RB36. A 78% starter snap rate and every starter carry turned the thesis into evidence.
Ja'Kobi Lane, WR, Ravens, WR69, NEW: Second-team starter, current WR3, and a live path past Bateman. That is a final-round swing with teeth.
Matthew Golden, WR, Packers, WR49, HOLD: Added at WR40. The price got cheaper, while his starter snaps in 12 personnel keep the thesis breathing.
The Flex Call
Fade Jeremiyah Love before pick 30. His consensus PPR ADP is 25, but the high ankle sprain removes the clean preseason runway and puts Week 1 on hope, not certainty. At pick 30, the five-slot discount starts paying for the missed work. Before that, somebody else can buy the rehab montage.
Injury Desk
NFL.com reported Love's high ankle sprain Sunday night. FantasyPros reported Moore was "good to go" after his ankle scare, Luther Burden III did light sprint work while returning from a groin injury, and Michael Pittman Jr. plus DK Metcalf will miss this practice week with undisclosed injuries. No mystery diagnoses added here. If the team did not name it, neither do we.
Call Sheet
Friday's Spears call looks a little smarter, with his PPR ADP moving from RB50 to RB48. Saturday's De'Zhaun Stribling stash still has juice after George Kittle praised his mindset, and the latest game recap credits him with seven catches on eight targets for 63 yards. Correction: the original call log said 62 yards. Sunday nailed Brooks' role, and the market moved him from RB36 to RB34. Three decent process wins, zero victory laps in mid-August.
