The Flex: Miami's Backfield Just Became a Two-Man Knife Fight

The Snap

De'Von Achane tore his ACL in Miami's Week 3 loss and is done for the season. The Dolphins put him on injured reserve, and Ollie Gordon II inherited the entire backfield after Achane left. Gordon played 61 snaps, took 17 carries, drew 3 targets, and handled the only running back touch after the injury. The result was ugly, 41 rushing yards, but the role was enormous.[1][2]

Do not hand Gordon a blank check. Jaylen Wright missed Week 3 with a foot and stinger issue, and NBC Sports reported he could return against the Jets. In the only full game Achane missed last season, Wright beat Gordon 26 to 20 in snaps and 15 to 10 in touches. Gordon is the first add. Wright is the cheap second move that could save you from treating one injury-created bell cow game like a permanent depth chart.[1][2]

The Calendar Says

This is Opening Month, Week 4, with 1 day until Pittsburgh and Cleveland kick off Thursday at 8:15 p.m. ET. The next date that matters is October 1, when that short-week injury report becomes a lineup decision. Three games are enough to expose usage, not enough to crown efficiency. Buy routes, snaps, and touches, then make the box score prove it can keep up.[5]

Around the League

Breece Hall

Aaron Glenn called Hall week-to-week with a quadriceps injury. Braelon Allen had 7 touches in Week 3 and now owns the cleanest path to lead work, but this is an injury bridge, not a permanent takeover.[1][3]

Jeremiyah Love

Arizona finally stopped pretending this was a committee. Love logged 56 snaps, 21 carries, and 5 targets while Tyler Allgeier managed 31 snaps, 2 carries, and 4 targets. That is an RB2 workload wearing a bad-offense discount.[2]

Brock Bowers

Welcome back to the sledgehammer. Bowers ran 35 routes, earned 13 targets, caught 10 balls for 116 yards and a touchdown, and participated on 92.1% of Las Vegas pass plays. Michael Mayer's playing time did not matter. Bowers ate the passing game anyway.[2]

Kenyon Sadiq

With Adonai Mitchell and Mason Taylor out, the rookie caught 7 of 8 targets for 105 yards and a touchdown. The Jets drafted him to matter, and Week 3 was the first receipt. Add him now, then watch whether the target tree stays this narrow when Mitchell returns.[1][3]

Stock Watch

Climbing

Jeremiyah Love: The split flipped from theory to evidence. A 25-touch opportunity count against Allgeier's 6 is not a hot hand. That is the job changing owners.[2]

Brock Bowers: A 92.1% route rate and 13 targets kill every buy-low window in one afternoon. If anyone is still pricing the slow start, take the gift and leave before they sober up.[2]

Kenyon Sadiq: Eight targets and a 105-yard breakout put him past streamer territory. The catch is obvious, two pass catchers were unavailable. The talent flashed, the permanence still has to earn a stamp.[1][3]

Slipping

Tyler Allgeier: Two carries on 31 snaps is a flashing red light. He is no longer a weekly flex while Love is taking the rush volume and passing work.[2]

Kaelon Black: Christian McCaffrey took 83% of the snaps and 65% of the carries. Black was down at 15% and 17%, with only 8 snaps and 4 carries. Handcuff only. The standalone case is cooked.[2]

Michael Mayer: He played 61 snaps and ran 29 routes, then drew 3 targets while Bowers drew 13. Cardio is not fantasy usage. He can leave standard-league benches.[2]

The Sleeper Shelf

Ollie Gordon II, RB, MIA, ADP not re-verified, RISING: The 61-snap, 20-touch takeover was real. Wright's possible return keeps this from graduation.[1][2]

Kenyon Sadiq, TE, NYJ, ADP not re-verified, NEW: Eight targets became 7 catches, 105 yards, and a touchdown. The next test is holding routes when Mitchell and Taylor heal.[1][3]

Adonai Mitchell, WR, NYJ, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: A finger injury kept him out of Week 3. Sadiq's breakout raised the competition, but Mitchell's outside role still deserves another healthy game.[1]

Oronde Gadsden, TE, LAC, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: David Njoku remains on injured reserve, and NBC Sports still calls Gadsden the clear short-term starter. The runway is open. The production has not landed.[1]

Demond Claiborne, RB, MIN, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: No fresh role proof in the window. That means no fake promotion. Keep the contingency swing on the shelf.

The Flex Call

Stash Jaylen Wright even if you won Ollie Gordon II. Gordon owned 61 snaps after Achane went down, but the last full Achane absence gave Wright a 26 to 20 snap edge and a 15 to 10 touch edge over Gordon. Wright is hurt, not erased. This backfield can turn into a split the second he is active.[1][2]

Injury Desk

De'Von Achane: NBC Sports reported a torn ACL and a season-ending placement on injured reserve.[1]

Breece Hall: NBC Sports reported a quadriceps injury and a week-to-week label from Aaron Glenn.[1]

Baker Mayfield: CBS Sports reported a thumb injury expected to cost at least 3 weeks. Tampa Bay's pass catchers just lost their weekly floor.[4]

Mike Evans: Fantasy Six Pack reported a rib injury and called his Week 4 availability doubtful. George Kittle drew 7 targets in the same game and becomes the pressure valve if Evans sits.[2]
