The Flex: Brooks Just Kicked the Door Open

The Snap

Jonathon Brooks did not merely return. He started. With Chuba Hubbard sidelined by a hamstring injury, Brooks played 8 snaps, ran 3 routes, drew 1 target, and took 3 carries against Buffalo. More important than the tiny box score, he handled every situation except third-and-long, then left when Carolina pulled the starters. That is the signal. [1]

Brooks is still going at RB36, four spots behind Hubbard at RB32. That price is living in last week's depth chart. Hubbard is week-to-week, Brooks already owns early downs and short yardage when Hubbard is absent, and Trevor Etienne was the third-and-long back. Carolina showed us the shape of this thing. Stop squinting. [2]

The Calendar Says

This is Preseason Week 1, and kickoff is 24 days away on Wednesday, September 9. Preseason Week 2 opens Thursday, August 20, just 4 days from now. [7][8] This week is for snap order, first-team work, and the early hook. The box-score king who cooked future insurance salesmen in the fourth quarter can keep his parade.

Around the League

KC Concepcion

Cleveland opened with Jerry Jeudy, Denzel Boston, and Concepcion for two drives. Concepcion worked mainly from the slot in 11 personnel, then took a 12-personnel snap in Jeudy's place. That second formation is the juice. He has a path to stay on the field instead of becoming a package player. [1]

Jaydon Blue

Blue played 20 of Dallas' 26 first-half snaps. Phil Mafah only spelled him on longer drives, and Malik Davis did not enter until the second half. Javonte Williams is still the starter, but the handcuff has a name now. It is Blue. [1]

Ja'Kobi Lane

Lane turned three catches into 38 yards and finished a 16-yard touchdown with a dive across the goal line. The rookie has stacked a loud camp and a clean debut. Do not crown him off three catches, but Baltimore clearly has more than a camp-story mascot here. [3]

Marlin Klein

Houston gave Klein one possession, and he used it to catch a 31-yard seam ball from Davis Mills. Then the second-round rookie got the same early hook as first-round center Keylan Rutledge. One drive, one explosive target, veteran treatment. That is how a role announces itself quietly. [4]

Stock Watch

Climbing

Jonathon Brooks: RB36 is stale after starter usage across every situation except third-and-long. Hubbard's injury opened the door, and Brooks walked through it without asking permission. [1][2]

KC Concepcion: First-team slot work was expected. Replacing Jeudy for a 12-personnel snap was not. That is the difference between a useful rookie and a weekly lineup problem for defenses. [1]

Jaydon Blue: 20 of 26 first-half snaps settles the backup fight for now. His value is contingent, but the contingency belongs to him. [1]

Slipping

Chuba Hubbard: He remains RB32, but Brooks is only four spots behind and already received starter treatment while Hubbard sat. Paying the higher price for the injured half of a tightening split is how August steals lunch money. [1][2]

Cam Skattebo: The market has him at RB18, but New York rotated Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary with the starters. Skattebo also came off on third downs. That is a brutal price for a three-man committee wearing a fake mustache. [1][2]

The Sleeper Shelf

Jonathon Brooks, RB, Carolina, RB36, NEW: Started, handled early downs and short yardage, and left with the starters. The market is one clean practice report behind. [1][2]

MarShawn Lloyd, RB, Green Bay, RB60, RISING: Josh Jacobs' groin issue created first-team work, and RB60 still prices Lloyd like a decorative bench piece. [2]

Tyjae Spears, RB, Tennessee, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: The near-even early-down, third-down, and short-yardage rotation remains the thesis. No fresh price, no fake movement.

Matthew Golden, WR, Green Bay, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: Starter snaps in 12 personnel keep the breakout path open. The shelf is waiting for a fresh market print.

Josh Downs, WR, Indianapolis, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: Established-player treatment still beats chasing a fourth-quarter stat line. Price first, confetti later.

The Flex Call

Draft Jonathon Brooks at RB36 and pass on Chuba Hubbard at RB32. Brooks played all 8 starter snaps available to him outside third-and-long, while Hubbard remains week-to-week. Four RB spots is not enough separation for the healthier back with the first-team audition already on tape. [1][2]

Injury Desk

Jeremiyah Love: ESPN reported the rookie will miss one week with a sore ankle and will sit against Dallas. Love played 23 snaps, rushed 11 times for 58 yards, and caught 3 passes for 14 yards before the soreness increased Friday. Arizona will reevaluate him next week. [5]

DJ Moore: Sports Illustrated reported Moore left after his third catch while grabbing his ankle. He finished with 3 catches for 61 yards, including a 32-yard gain. Joe Brady said Moore felt good afterward, but the medical review was still pending. Encouraging is not cleared. [6]
