The Flex: The Foot Tax Just Hit the 1-2 Turn

The Snap

Kenneth Walker III missed Tuesday's practice with a foot issue. That is the whole headline, and it is enough. Fantasy Life has Walker going around the 1-2 turn, priced like the rare multi-down back with the Kansas City backfield to himself. There is no diagnosis and no reported Week 1 threat yet. There is also no reason to pretend a foot problem is decorative jewelry on a running back. [1]

Walker has missed nine games in four NFL seasons, and Seattle managed his workload last year while he dealt with foot and ankle soreness. Kansas City paid for the bell cow. Fantasy drafters are paying for the same thing. If this stretches into next week, the role assumption gets taxed before the projection does. [2]

Do not panic-drop Walker down a tier off one missed practice. Do stop drafting the backfield like it has no contingency. Rookie Emmett Johnson is the identified handcuff, and the final bench round is exactly where uncertainty should become your problem before it becomes everyone else's. [2]

The Calendar Says

This is Preseason Week 3, with 14 days until New England and Seattle open the regular season on Wednesday, September 9. The next date that matters is Thursday, August 27, when the third preseason weekend starts, then rosters hit 53 players by 6 p.m. ET on August 30. [3][4] Starters sitting now is not lost data. It means depth order, bubble survival and post-cutdown handcuffs are the signal, while fourth-quarter box scores are mostly fan fiction.

Around the League

New England Patriots

ESPN's Mike Reiss called Rhamondre Stevenson the clear No. 1 and projected a 65-35 split over TreVeyon Henderson, with pass protection driving the trust gap. Henderson's ankle absence matters, but the bigger story is that Stevenson owned the lead before it. Stop drafting this like a coin flip. [5]

Los Angeles Rams

Kyren Williams and Blake Corum were near a 65-35 split last season. ESPN's Sarah Barshop expects that to move closer to 50-50 after Corum returned leaner and more explosive. Williams can still score. He just cannot keep getting priced like Corum is a decorative sideline item. [5]

Houston Texans

David Montgomery is projected to lead Woody Marks 70-30. Montgomery gets the physical lead role, while Marks stays involved rather than disappearing. That is enough work for Marks to remain a bench swing, not enough to draft a committee fantasy because you liked one preseason cut. [5]

Pittsburgh Steelers

Jaylen Warren played nine snaps to Rico Dowdle's 10 against the Jets, and each handled five carries. Warren remains the third-down preference. The rushing work is a split until somebody actually wins it, not until your draft room declares a winner. [5]

Stock Watch

Climbing

Rhamondre Stevenson: The 65-35 projection and clear No. 1 label are stronger than generic camp buzz. Henderson is the home-run complement. Stevenson owns the weekly floor. [5]

Mike Washington Jr.: Ashton Jeanty's ankle sprain is not expected to be long term, but Washington rose to RB47 in Fantasy Life's rankings and projects as the low-end RB2 while Jeanty sits. That is useful contingent value without pretending he stole the job. [6]

Bucky Irving: Tampa's starters played two series, Irving took three carries for 14 yards, and Kenny Gainwell had one rushing attempt. The committee panic got one drive and no evidence. [5]

Slipping

Tyler Warren: A groin issue could keep him out of practice this week, while his consensus ADP sits at 51.7. Fifth-round tight ends are supposed to remove questions, not arrive carrying a new one. [1][7]

Kyren Williams: A projected move from 65-35 to 50-50 is not a small haircut. It is a role rewrite. Draft the back you expect, not the workload you remember. [5]

Denver running backs: Sean Payton produced a 200-carry back only five times from 2006 through 2021, excluding his 2012 suspension, and only once in three Denver seasons. J.K. Dobbins, Jonah Coleman and RJ Harvey are a committee until the field says otherwise. [5]

The Sleeper Shelf

Emmett Johnson, RB, Chiefs, ADP not verified, NEW: Walker's foot issue exposed the direct handcuff path. The shelf is buying the contingency before the room buys the headline. [2]

Mike Washington Jr., RB, Raiders, ADP not verified, RISING: Jeanty is hopeful for Week 1, but Washington is now RB47 in Fantasy Life's rankings and owns the temporary volume lane. [6]

Jonathon Brooks, RB, Panthers, ADP not re-verified, RISING: Chuba Hubbard's hamstring injury could push more early work toward Brooks, with third-down usage keeping the standalone case alive. [5]

Matthew Golden, WR, Packers, ADP not re-verified, HOLD: Golden, Christian Watson and Jayden Reed are the clear top three, and ESPN identified Golden as the possible volume leader. The role is cleaner. The price is not freshly verified. [5]

The Flex Call

Use the final non-kicker bench pick on Emmett Johnson.

Walker missed Tuesday with a foot issue after missing nine games in four seasons, and Johnson is the direct handcuff. Do not reach into the useful receiver rounds. Do make the cheap move before another missed practice turns him into everybody's favorite sleeper. [2]

Injury Desk

Fantasy Life reported Walker's foot absence, Warren's groin issue and Mike Evans missing Tuesday with a groin issue. Ja'Marr Chase landed awkwardly, grabbed his knee and returned to the Cincinnati sideline after evaluation. No diagnosis or missed-game timetable was reported for Walker, Evans or Chase in the cited update. [1]

Yahoo Sports reported Arizona waived Trey Benson with an injury designation after his left knee limited him throughout camp. He played 17 games across two Cardinals seasons, averaged 4.9 yards per carry and now exits a backfield led by Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier and James Conner. [8]
