The Flex: Lamar Gets the Softest Pass Defense on the Biggest Total of Week 3
The Snap
Lamar Jackson has the best spot on the board. Baltimore at Dallas has a 52.5 total at DraftKings, the highest of the week. The total is the over/under on combined points from both teams. Baltimore's implied team total is 28.0. An implied team total is how many points the betting market expects a team to score, worked out from the spread and the total. Bigger number, more touchdowns to go around. Dallas sits at 24.5, so both sides of this game are live.
The Dallas defense is why. It ranks 30th in pass EPA per play at 0.35. EPA per play means Expected Points Added: how many points a play moved the team toward scoring compared with an average play from the same spot. Positive is good on offense, negative is good on defense. That makes 0.35 ugly. Dallas has also given up 25.3 PPR points per game to quarterbacks, fifth-softest in the league. PPR points allowed are fantasy points (one point per catch) a defense has given up to a position each game. High number, soft matchup. And Dallas can't stop the run either: it ranks 28th in rush EPA, which is good news for Derrick Henry. On the other side, Dallas throws on 63% of its plays. Pass rate is the share of plays the offense throws instead of runs. It tells you which teams feed receivers and which feed backs. So CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Jake Ferguson are all firmly in play.
The catch is Zay Flowers. He did not practice with a hamstring injury. If he sits, Rashod Bateman and Devontez Walker are next on the depth chart. That doesn't change the Lamar call. What would prove me wrong: two weeks is a tiny sample, and a Dallas defense this bad could still clean up in one game. Treat every rank in this issue as a lean, not a law.
The Setup
The top six games by total, per DraftKings via ESPN. The spread is the head start the underdog gets. Seahawks -3 means Seattle has to win by more than 3 for that bet to cash.
| Game | DraftKings line | Total | Implied totals | Kickoff (ET) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BAL @ DAL | BAL -3.5 | 52.5 | BAL 28.0, DAL 24.5 | Sun 4:25 p.m. |
| LAC @ BUF | BUF -7 | 50.5 | BUF 28.8, LAC 21.8 | Sun 1:00 p.m. |
| NYJ @ DET | DET -6.5 | 47.5 | DET 27.0, NYJ 20.5 | Sun 1:00 p.m. |
| ARI @ SF | SF -8.5 | 47.5 | SF 28.0, ARI 19.5 | Sun 4:05 p.m. |
| KC @ MIA | KC -10.5 | 46.5 | KC 28.5, MIA 18.0 | Sun 1:00 p.m. |
| NE @ JAX | JAX -3 | 45.5 | JAX 24.2, NE 21.2 | Sun 1:00 p.m. |
Buffalo has the highest implied total on the slate at 28.8. Kansas City is right behind at 28.5, but a 10.5-point spread means the Chiefs could be running the ball by the fourth quarter. Kenneth Walker III owners should love that. Detroit's 27.0 comes with a twist: the Lions' defense has given up the most PPR points in the league to quarterbacks (33.2), receivers (43.0) and tight ends (29.4). That makes the Jets' 20.5 a sneaky number.
Games to fade: Tennessee at the Giants has the lowest total at 39.5. Seattle at Washington is at 40.5, and Washington's 16.8 is the smallest implied total of the week. Philadelphia at Chicago on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET is at 41.5, with Chicago implied for 18.5.
Other windows: Atlanta at Green Bay is tonight, Thursday, at 8:15 p.m. ET. The Rams at Denver is Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET. No teams are on bye.
Usage Report
The data is thin this week. The player-level usage file in our pack came back empty, so there are no per-player target, carry or snap numbers to quote. I will not make them up. What we have is team-level usage from nflverse play-by-play: how often each team throws and how many plays it runs. Combined with depth-chart roles, that still shows which players are getting fed. The pack flags no roster moves, so every baseline below comes from the player's current team.
| Player | Team | Team pass rate | Plays per game | Opp. PPR allowed to position (rank) | Implied total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chris Olave | NO | 65% | 75.0 | WR 21.8 (28th) | 23.2 |
| Nico Collins | HOU | 66% | 74.5 | WR 42.4 (3rd) | 22.5 |
| CeeDee Lamb | DAL | 63% | 53.0 | WR 31.2 (14th) | 24.5 |
| DK Metcalf | PIT | 68% | 64.0 | WR 25.0 (24th) | 19.5 |
| Tucker Kraft | GB | 67% | 58.5 | TE 20.7 (4th) | 23.5 |
| Kenneth Walker III | KC | 55% | 71.0 | RB 37.1 (1st) | 28.5 |
| Trey McBride | ARI | 59% | 58.0 | TE 6.1 (29th) | 19.5 |
- Olave: New Orleans runs more plays than anyone (75.0 a game) and throws 65% of the time. That's a volume floor. The Raiders' defense (7th in pass EPA) caps the ceiling.
- Collins: Houston runs 74.5 plays and throws 66% of the time, against an Indianapolis defense that is 3rd-softest to receivers. The best setup on the board, if he plays. He did not practice (hamstring).
- Lamb: Dallas runs only 53.0 plays but throws on 63% of them. Fewer snaps, but most of them are passes.
- Metcalf: Pittsburgh throws the most in the league (68%) and has the second-worst offensive EPA per play (-0.33). Lots of throws, not much coming from them. Cincinnati is 4th in pass EPA.
- Kraft: Green Bay throws 67% of the time, and Atlanta has given up 20.7 PPR points to tight ends. That's his game tonight.
- Walker: Kansas City runs 71.0 plays a game, Miami is the softest defense in the league for running backs (37.1), and the Chiefs are 10.5-point favorites.
- McBride: The volume is there. The matchup isn't: San Francisco has given up just 6.1 points to tight ends.

Coin flips
- Chris Olave vs. Courtland Sutton at flex: Olave. The tiebreaker is 75.0 plays a game against Denver's 51.0.
- Geno Smith vs. Bo Nix at QB: Geno. Detroit gives up the most points to quarterbacks (33.2). The Rams give up 12.2.
- AJ Barner vs. Kenyon Sadiq as a streaming TE: Sadiq. Detroit (29.4) is softer than Washington (22.0), and Seattle throws only 46% of the time.
Waiver Wire
ADP is a rough proxy for who is rostered. It comes from August standard-scoring drafts. A player with no ADP is either truly available or someone the feed missed.
1. MarShawn Lloyd, GB RB. First on Green Bay's depth chart with no ADP. The Packers are implied for 23.5 tonight. Atlanta is 8th in rush EPA, so the value is the job, not this matchup. Bid 18% of your FAAB budget, and claim him before kickoff if your league has open waivers.
2. Jake Ferguson, DAL TE. TE1 in the biggest game of the week (implied 24.5) on a team that throws 63% of the time. ADP of 165.9 means he went in the last round of 10-team drafts. Bid 10%.
3. Kenyon Sadiq, NYJ TE. TE1 against the defense that gives up the most points to tight ends (29.4). A streamer with some upside. Bid 5%.
4. AJ Barner, SEA TE. TE1 against Washington, 3rd-softest to tight ends (22.0), with a 23.8 implied total. Seattle's 46% pass rate limits him. Bid 5%.
5. Dalton Schultz, HOU TE. Houston runs 74.5 plays at a 66% pass rate against an Indianapolis defense that is 5th-softest to tight ends (18.8). He sat out practice for rest, not injury. Bid 4%.
6. Brenton Strange, JAX TE. TE1 with a 24.2 implied total, but New England gives up only 6.2 to tight ends. He's a hold for later weeks, not a start this week. Bid 3%.
7. Juwan Johnson, NO TE. TE1 on the team that runs the most plays in the league. Bid 2%.
